AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 Closes in Friendship Heights Mall
AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 has permanently closed its doors in Friendship Heights. The shutdown comes nearly a year after AMC permanently closed the historic Uptown Theater in Cleveland Park in March, just ahead of the nationwide pandemic shutdown.
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on businesses across America, decimating the movie industry.
The latest victim is AMC Mazza Gallerie 7, which has closed permanently in Friendship Heights.
On Friday, the AMC Theaters website posted: “AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 has closed for good. We hope to see you at our next nearest location: AMC Courthouse Plaza 8. ”
Mazza Gallerie has become a ghost town since the start of the pandemic. The 294,000 square foot retail center was sold in August to Annaly Commercial Real Estate Group Inc. for $ 38 million in a foreclosure auction after its owner, a subsidiary of Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp . of New York, defaulted on $ 67.1 million in loans it had taken out to buy the property in 2017.
The cinema shutdown comes a year after AMC permanently closed the historic Uptown Theater in Cleveland Park in March, unrelated to the nationwide pandemic shutdown.
At the time, AMC’s Director of Corporate Communications, Ryan Noonan, told WTOP: “We offer our sincere gratitude to the community for their support of the theater and invite them to visit [nearby] AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 ”, but now that no longer exists.
Across the country, 60% of existing cinemas remain closed.
