Death notice of Marie Laxton (1935 – 2021) – Memphis, TN
Memphis – 85, moved on to her next trip on July 9, 2021. She was born October 6, 1935 in Lambert, Mississippi, to Alfred Leroy Wimberly and Fannie Belle Cox. Mary became a Christian at a young age and led her family to the Nazarene Church. She is survived by one daughter, Cathy Sanford and her son-in-law Michael Hoffman of Collierville, TN; one daughter, Tammy Laxton of Memphis, Tennessee; and her twin brother Timothy Laxton and stepdaughter Donna Laxton of Bartlett, TN. His grandchildren, Marcus Sanford, Megan Laxton and James Michael Hoffman, all of Memphis, TN, as well as many nieces and nephews are also in mourning. She is predeceased by her husband, Bobby Laxton. Marie was a hard worker, often holding multiple jobs or walking long distances to work in order to support her family. Her proudest achievement was the creation and ownership of the baby store, Mommy and Me. She has maintained a strong love and devotion for her family and the extended family of the church, the New Hope Church of the Nazarene. There she was a Sunday School teacher, director of missions, director of women’s ministries, church steward, and she served countless hours of outreach to the church community and the neighborhood. Her childhood dream was to be a missionary in the Cape Verde Islands and although this dream was not realized, she was a missionary in every sense of the word. She donated to build two water wells in Africa to provide vital water where there was none. She had a beautiful smile and was a kind and simple person. Well done, good and faithful servant. A visitation for Mary will take place on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. PM.
