D’Tigers recall Diogu and Uzoh for qualifying

Tigers captains Ike Diogu and Ben Uzoh have been named in the preliminary roster to appear in the first window of the 2023 FIBA ​​Men’s World Cup qualifiers in Benguela, Angola from November 26-28.

Nigerians in Group A will face Cape Verde, Mali and Uganda.

They will face Cape Verde in their opener on November 26 before facing Mali on November 27 while their final group match will face Uganda on November 28.

D’Tigers coach Mike Brown will miss the competition as he is currently signed with the Golden State Warriors who have had an impressive start to the 2021/22 NBA season. The team will however be coached by Julius Nwosu who played one season with the San Antonio Spurs in 1994/95.

Nwosu, who won the Russian league title in 1996 with CSKA Moscow, has played in 14 different countries during his 14-year career. He will be assisted by Rivers Hoopers coach Ogor Odaudu.

Guest players are – Ike Diogu, Ben Uzoh, Jeleel Akindele, Tarekeyi Edogi, Amanze Egekeze, Ike Iroegbu, Christopher Obekpa, Jordan Ogundiran, Keith Omeorah and Onyenso Kingsley.

Five home players have been invited for qualifying: Abdulwahab Yakubu, Michael Okiki, Ibe Agu, Bright Akhuetie and Owen Oriakhi.

Nigeria, who have won all of their matches in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers in China, hope to continue their unbeaten streak in the qualifiers this quarter.
