Evelyn M. Cabral, of East Providence, dies at 87

Evelyn M. Cabral of East Providence, RI passed away suddenly on Friday, May 28, 2021, at the age of 87.

The ex-wife of the late Joseph Cabral Jr., Evelyn is survived by her children: Professor David M. Cabral of East Providence, Doreen M. Cabral-Deschenes and her husband Raymond Deschenes of Florida, and Stephen Cabral and his husband Brendan Byrnes of New York City. She was also an attentive “grandmother” to the dogs Rocky, Hugo and the late Sophie Cabral.

Born July 18, 1933, in the Fox Point section of Providence, Evelyn was the youngest child of Antone M. Costa and Helen (Rezendes) Costa, both from Povoação, São Miguel in the Azores. She was raised alongside her older brothers, the late Joseph M. Costa and the late Ernest Costa, in an apartment on Ann Street and George M. Cohan Boulevard.

After getting married and raising a family on Wickenden Street, Evelyn first worked for the city of Providence as a sergeant at Fox Point Elementary School, then worked for many jewelry companies in Providence and in surroundings. Before her retirement in 2004, she worked as a specialist jewelry assembler at BA Ballou & Company for almost 20 years. Evelyn was known for her good taste in jewelry, which was evident in the pretty pieces she wore every day.

Evelyn was extremely proud of her interesting and close-knit family, and time spent with her children is what she cherished most. She will always be remembered as an avid reader, an animal lover, a knitter and crocheter, a hot sausage enthusiast, a master puzzle, a passionate about daily newspapers, a connoisseur of very good pastry, a devoted Patriots fan and theater lover. Evelyn will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021, at Our Lady of The Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence, with a Christian funeral mass immediately following at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

Mass will also be broadcast live on the Facebook page of Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire church.
