Fundraising for the Memorial of Portuguese and Luso-American Veterans

NEWPORT — The RI Portugal Day Committee will host a fundraiser on Saturday, October 15 to benefit the erection of a memorial to Portuguese and Luso-American veterans at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery.

The Wine Tasting and Appetizers event will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the home of benefactor Connie Silva, located at 10 Ridge Rd. in Newport. Wines will be provided by Brands of Portugal Wines and Spirits of Rumford, RI

The memorial is the brainchild of Ana Isabel dos Reis-Couto, chair of the Rhode Island Day of Portugal committee.

She told O Jornal that every time she visited the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, she always asked herself the same question: “Why isn’t there a memorial dedicated to Portuguese and Luso soldiers? Americans Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice?

The monument was designed by Portuguese-American architect Sid Silveira, who recently won his commission after a design competition.

Measuring 6×6 feet, the New England granite monument is inspired by the Order of the Cross of Christ, which serves as the symbol of the Portuguese military and is a traditional symbol used to recognize outstanding service by soldiers and soldiers. civilians.

The front façade will be engraved with an epitaph honoring the Portuguese-Americans who honorably served this country.

The monument will be surrounded by a mulch-lined area full of lavender, the official flower of Portugal, and hydrangeas embodying the Azores and the island of Madeira.
