ICE to Host International Conference on the Role of Election Management Bodies

The Election Commission of India is organizing a two-day international conference on “Role, Framework and Capacity of Election Management Bodies” from October 31 in New Delhi.

ECI, as lead of the cohort on ‘Election Integrity’, has invited Greece, Mauritius and IFES to be co-leads of the cohort. He also invited UNDP and International IDEA, in addition to EMBs and government counterparts responsible for the conduct of elections around the world.

“Nearly 50 participants from eleven EMBs from 11 countries, including Armenia, Mauritius, Nepal, Cape Verde, Australia, Chile, Federal States of Micronesia, Greece, Philippines, São Tomé & Príncipe , the United States and three international organizations namely IFES, International IDEA and UNDP India are expected to join. Many other countries are represented through their missions in New Delhi,” the election commission said in a statement. .

The conference will be opened by Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar and the closing session will be chaired by Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.

The first two sessions of Day 1 will have discussions on current and future challenges facing EMBs with respect to their role and framework in ensuring “electoral integrity”.

The second session is on “Future Challenges” and will be co-chaired by the Secretary General of International IDEA and the Head of Department for Elections and Political Parties, Directorate of Elections, Ministry of Interior, Hellenic Republic, Greece.

To solidify the cohort’s recommendations on election integrity, the ECI will also organize a conference on the topics of ‘technology’ and ‘inclusive elections’ – two essential elements for election integrity around the world.
