According to Portugal News, more than 960,000 overnight stays were also generated on the island of Madeira, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“Although the overnight stays recorded in September 2022 were lower than the records for July and August of the same year – during which the million threshold was exceeded – this value corresponds to the highest ever recorded in the month of September and the third highest monthly record ever.”, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has pointed out in this regard.

The statistics provided by the DREM reveal that in this sector, there has been a marked increase from year to year, with a growth of more than 32.4% in the number of customers and more than 25% in overnight stays.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, in June, the number of nights spent by tourists in Madeira and the Azores exceeded the pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019.

At the same time, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 2.7 million visitors and 7.2 million overnight stays.

The figures show that in the first half of 2022, the number of overnight stays increased by 252.4%. On the other hand, compared to the same period in 2019, the number of beds decreased by 7.0%.

As the Institute explains, in the second quarter of this year, the number of overnight stays increased by 209.9% compared to the same period in 2019. Resident overnight stays increased by 55.6%, while those of tourists increased by 450.1 percent.
