Portugal sends more vaccines to São Tomé and Príncipe

Portugal will send a second batch of Covid-19 vaccines to São Tomé and Príncipe, totaling 37,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

In a statement published on August 24, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) specifies that this new batch will be “followed by all the material necessary for the viability of the administration”, including syringes and needles.

The document specifies that this batch will arrive in the city of São Tomé on August 25, where it will be delivered by the Portuguese ambassador in the archipelago to the health authorities of São Tomé.

According to the MNE, the aid is part of the second phase of the action plan for the health response to the Covid-19 pandemic between Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor.

“This donation is part of the fulfillment of the political commitment made by the Portuguese government to provide at least 5% of its batches of vaccines to PALOP and East Timor, and is part of the second phase of the plan to action in the health response. to the Covid-19 pandemic between Portugal and the PALOPs and East Timor, ”the note indicates.

This is the second delivery of COVID-19 doses from Portugal to São Tomé and Príncipe, after Portuguese authorities sent 12,000 vaccines to the archipelago in July.

São Tomé and Príncipe has recorded 37 deaths associated with the disease and 2,546 infected cumulatively since the start of the pandemic, with 98 active cases currently known.

Since the start of the pandemic, Africa has recorded more than 7.5 million infections, including more than 189,000 deaths, according to data from continental organizations.
