Rohr sweats over Osimhen’s fitness ahead of Liberia and Cape Verde clashes
Super eagles Forward Victor Osimhen became a doubt for Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde in November after sustaining a muscle injury in training on Saturday.
The club have confirmed that the in-form striker will not be available for his Sunday (today) clash against Salernitana at Arechi Stadium due to a muscle injury he sustained in training.
“Osimhen left the field prematurely with muscle tension in his right gastrocnemius. Victor will not leave for the trip to Salerno, “the club said on its website.
Gastrocnemius injury is the most common form of calf strain and usually takes one to three weeks to fully heal.
The 22-year-old is Rohr’s most reliable striker in the national team ahead of Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, Terem Moffi and Taiwo Awoniyi and he hopes to have him available for clashes.
The Nigerian who joined the Italian team from Lille in the summer of 2020 has scored nine goals in 12 appearances for the club in all competitions, including five in Serie A in eight games.
Napoli have won nine matches so far and drew against José Mourinho’s Roma at Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, a result that ended their perfect streak.
Nigeria, who have yet to book a spot for the African phase of the World Cup qualifiers, will face Liberia on November 13 in Morocco before hosting Cape Verde for their final Group C match. .
