São Tomé, Príncipe important partner of Nigeria — Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Nigeria’s relations with the central African twin nation of Sao Tome and Principe have grown over the years and will even be further strengthened.
Osinbajo said this on Saturday during the presidential inauguration of the new president of Sao Tome and Principe, Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, in the city of Sao Tome.
Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President for Media and Publicity Laolu Akande revealed in a statement titled “Nigeria’s relations with São Tomé and Principe are developing, Osinbajo said during the presidential inauguration “.
According to Akande’s statement, Osinbajo spoke to reporters after the swearing-in,
Osinbajo said: “We think São Tomé and Principe is an important partner and we have a very strategic relationship, which is why we are here, not only to congratulate the new president, but to reestablish a relationship, a relationship, which , by the way, has grown steadily over the years.
The vice-president also noted that the two countries “now plan to strengthen their bilateral relations because of the strategic partnership between them”.
He added: “We have a joint development agreement, especially with regard to the oil and gas sector where we share a common interest.
“We are also looking to strengthen the relationship in other ways [such as] hospitality, agriculture and all that.
While congratulating the new president, Osinbajo expressed Nigeria’s willingness to re-establish stronger ties with the island country.
Later, the newly sworn-in president Vila Nova held his first bilateral meeting as president with Osinbajo at the presidential office of the city of Sao Tome, where the two leaders exchanged pleasantries and declared themselves ready to deepen their diplomatic relations and economic.
Osinbajo was accompanied on the trip by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zubairu Dada and some members of the House of Representatives, including Hafiz Kawu, as well as the Nigerian Ambassador to São Tomé and Principe, Christopher Chiejina.
Osinbajo has since returned to Abuja.
