Three hooded men gun down São Tomé national in alleged “racial” assassination
A 35-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Damaia neighborhood of Amadora (Sintra).
Although he was transported alive to Amadora Sintra hospital, he died shortly after.
Police reportedly suspect the attack was racially motivated.
The victim, Carlos Cruz, from São Tomé, had no criminal record. He was just “on the street” with his girlfriend when the three men, wearing hoodies, approached.
For many, the nationality of Carlos Cruz is “just a detail”. But according to Jornal de Notícias, he was in an “area where relations between two nationalities are not well regarded” – and the girlfriend is Cape Verdean.
Indeed, the girlfriend claims to have recognized one of the attackers, and “provided his nickname,” JN adds – suggesting the man may be linked to a local gang.
The murder took place at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday in Rua de Fernão de Magalhães, Damaia, and the police have so far only one witness: the girlfriend.
The “singularity” of this crime was the absence of cartridge cases at the scene, JN said.
“All open hypotheses, the fact that the victim does not have a criminal record suggests that it has nothing to do with a settlement of accounts for illicit affairs,” adds the newspaper.
